Bone Music

Came across this interesting article in FastCompany a few weeks ago. Talking about how hipsters would listen to and then press music into medical X-Rays to distribute American Rock n’ Roll in Soviet Russia.Pretty interesting, would love to get my hands on one. Though, I’m sure every record collector could say the same. Let’s bring this back.

Artís Coffee

I had never heard of Artís until I was reading a post from an old friend about how he had designed some pour over stands that were on sale at Artís.  That being said, I still had no idea where the store front was.

On one of our trips up North to visit family we stopped off at 4th street in Berkeley and I saw Artís on the block.  It's an interesting store front, selling a lot more retail items than other storefronts.  So there is plenty of stuff to browse through.  My favorite part of Artís though, was that you pick your beans in their green state, and they flash roast a pound for you in a small air roaster.  Not sure what any coffee snob would think about that, however, I thought it was a pretty cool little feature, and I thought the beans tasted pretty great.

Go enjoy a pound:

K and V Bake

I'm so stoked to be able to write about this for a few different reasons.  One of which being that this is some of the best bread I have had in Southern California (notoriously NOT good at sourdough's).  The second of which is that these two are working on the business that I had always wanted to had but didn't have the balls, or the skill.
The duo run a home bakery which uses all organic and local ingredients.  They make their sourdough from a live yeast culture starter meaning that it is a true sourdough bread.  My favorite thing, they believe in the "less is more" philosophy and use the highest quality ingredients.

Here's the trick:

You sign up for their newsletter and every week you get an email with the week's offerings.  You can then place an order on the website for delivery in pretty much the entire Los Angeles area (pretty much).  They have designated delivery times for different area's of the basin, so make sure you keep an eye on the schedule.  Of course you can also pick up, but make sure you drop an email so they know when to expect you.  Again, this isn't a brick and mortar shop.  This is a fully licensed and credited home bakery.  And let me just say... They do it really really well.

Get bread delivered end of day to take home for dinner, or have it delivered in time for afternoon coffee break and share with your co-workers.  Honestly, it's the best thing outside of San Francisco.  Just wish my midsection could handle more deliveries.  (spare tire).

Love it.  Go Big.

Courier Coffee Roasters

Good friends of mine took a trip up to the Pacific Northwest, and knowing that I'm a huge fan of finding all the small batch roasters in America.  They brought back a pound of the happy bean for me.  <!--more-->I brewed Courier using two methods, the French Press and the Chemex.  To be honest, I preferred the pour over going through a paper filter with this roast.  Not sure why or for what reason, just had a deeper flavor and was less acidic to me.  I don't know much about the company themselves, they're unique branding on the bag of beans has me thinking they're a unique small company, making it all the more exciting that I was able to grab a pound.  Check them out in person at:

#MusicMonday: Spirit Family Reunion

I'm not really sure if "Music Monday" is actually going to be a thing or not.  But let's just pretend for a minute that I've been doing it for years.  I got an email today mentioning that Spirit Family Reunion's new record will be out in a week or so.  I'm really digging these three tracks they're allowing you to preview until the actual record comes out.

I pose these questions though.  Will I remember to download the record when it is actually released? Will they send another email reminding me to download it?  Or will I just forget to purchase it rendering this whole "pre-order" thing useless?  I hope I remember, because I'm sure this album will be my soundtrack to Spring.  Hope you'll purchase the new record, and check out their back catalog while you're at it.  There should be more talk about this group.

Four in Four

This piece was posted on VSCO Journal just recently.  It's a beautiful piece both visually and technically.  I don't like to criticize at all but my only thought is that the quick cuts never really build to something at the end of the piece.  However, this is me, a commercial editor talking.  This could be a piece for a million different brands, and with the right voice over and brand to back it.  It could easily end up as a broadcast television spot, which in my opinion trumps any sort of criticism I could have at about the piece.

Wonderfully executed and beautiful compositions help drive the piece forward.  The fact that it was colored with VSCO Film is only a sweetener and proves that VSCO can be such a powerful tool.  I can't wait until their iterations of the Look Up Table (LUT) is released and I can use their tool in my native workflow for film and video.  (This is speculation.  Make it happen VSCO.).

Enjoy your hump day.

Generic Brand Video

2014-03-25-Generic-Brand-Video.jpg

This is one of the most clever advertisements for a stock video footage website I've ever seen.  It made me want to browse the site for footage, or contribute with my own.  This may go over the heads of some people, but if you know what a brand video is or you've seen one like this, than your part of the "inside" joke.  Happy Tuesday.  I hope you're cranking through the week.

Ryan Tatar / 35MM Surf Photography

2014-03-17-Ryan-Tatar.jpg

I've been following Ryan Tatar on Instagram and Twitter for a while now and have really loved some of the imagery.   Especially as I just wake up and being able to browse through the imagery he's captured of waves and wave riders really changes your mood when you wake up. Most excellently enough Korduroy TV has posted a beautiful piece on Ryan and his work using the analog medium and how he's able to capture such great shots of his "sea-tribes".  Hope you enjoy it and follow him on Instagram for updates pretty much daily.  He reminds me of another photographer who works in a completely different field, but gets his kicks out in the real world, with his lens.

Popcorn

2014-03-12-Popcorn.jpg

Just browsing the internet this morning and came across a beautifully done piece on popcorn for NPR.  I'm glad that my wife has finally come around to liking one of my favorite snacks since childhood.  Probably goes back to my mom making popcorn after school or for snack time. Regardless of why I like popcorn so much, this is a fun way to get your Wednesday into gear.  POPCORN!

Oil Man

2014-02-20-OilMan.jpg

There's not much to say about this piece.  It's beautifully shot and well put together.  They seem to have a formula set for what their work looks like at all times.  It's so nice to be able to have that look and feel already ingrained in your being especially moving forward.  This piece is put together by people with a photography background and you can tell as most of the shots have a beautiful pace and feel.  Something that seems to be a rare commodity in this day and age.  Based in the Pacific Northwest.  Where it feels like all of the really great and highly stylized content is coming from.

Superbowl Social Media

2014-02-05-14_SuperBowlHashtag.jpg

The Superbowl is over and all of the advertisers are checking their demographics to see what kind of reach they're multimillion dollar campaigns attracted.  However, it seems as though one thing is certain.  Everyone wants the discussion about their brand to go far beyond the big game.  Everyone wants their brands to be at the center of discussion on Instagram, Facebook and if not mostly Twitter.Being in the Advertising Post Production field I was interested in what all the end card's looked like for the Superbowl spots.  One thing is strikingly similar.  The # is alive and prevalent.  If not even built into the title of the piece making it almost subliminal that you even saw a hashtag.  Ever since the #bluredlines hashtag strewn across some pop star's music video we've been inundated with this idea that the hashtag is here to stay.  Subliminal, Overstated, or just plain absurd it seems as though the necessity for Social Media engagement goes well past of game day media buys.  It seems as though it's almost more substantial than the initial campaign itself. Especially when referencing something like Bud Light's over teased Superbowl Campaign this year.  The spots started what seemed to be months before the Superbowl.  Teasing an advertising campaign and having you check out more content on social media before the actually advertisement even aired.  Teasing a Superbowl advertisement, what a weird concept.  Though I'm sure it captivated audiences all over the country and kept them glued to their seats even between sporting action.

Social Media seems to be something that every brand needs to think, re-think, conceptualize and decide a clear path through to end result in order to keep their audience engaged and not lost in this ever changing media landscape of social media platforms.  What is cool? What is in? What is out?  (Facebook is out).   One thing is certain, no broadcast advertisement is complete without a well thought out (or not) dedicated hashtag to engage it's viewers.

Nirvana at the Los Angeles Forum

010414_NirvanaPost.jpg

Over the holiday's I was having a nice chat with my father-in-law about seeing bands and listening to music and all that sorts of stuff.  He was telling me all the great acts he got to see at the L.A. Forum when he was growing up just outside of East Los Angeles.  A few weeks ago I came across this cool posting from a band that was prevalent when I was growing up.  It was their last appearance at the L.A. Forum and only a few days later Kurt passed away.  It's a pretty beautiful piece to be able to take a glimpse at the man and how he was able to perform when he was so burdened by the demons that eventually took him. I'm sure this is old and you've seen it before, but if for some reason it isn't.  Please enjoy.

Year In Review 2013 (Year of the Baby)

If you ask me, I think we had quite an amazing year.  Some of the biggest changes in my life occurred during this last year.  Honestly, this might be the first time I've ever been sad about the passing of another year.  I feel like we've really become quite an amazing unit over the past year especially with recent addition of Oliver to our family.  Clearly if you follow me on Instagram you know that this has been the year of the baby.  I am sure that it's not the most fun thing for you to look at over and over again.  However, this has been a huge transition in my life, and its been all about him.  Much like your life is about art, or puppies, or food, or photography.  My life has transitioned to becoming a father which is all encompassing and to be quite honest.  I'm super fucking proud of it and you either get that, or you don't.  No big deal. Hope you enjoy the look at our two thousand and thirteen, and we hope that you'll make it into next years "Year In Review".  Happy New Year!

That time when these guys just made a joke car commercial in their garage and it was recognized by Nissan and they probably got more advertising work out of it? Just pick up a camera, commit to executing a good idea in a funny or unique way and you never know what can happen.

This is so well executed you'll be confused for the first few seconds as you try and figure out why the beauty shots on this auto aren't what you're used to seeing. Thanks to Keana for the link.

Brought Back To Life

broughtbacktolife.jpg

Just finished the latest installment to my series "My Friends are Talented". Way back in August I got the chance to hang out with Mike Ambrose as he was putting together some new furniture pieces.  We had a chance to chat about his new craft, his new lifestyle, and what makes him smile now.   If you find yourself in need of bespoke craft furniture.  I'd hope you'd look at Ambrose Woodworks.  Especially after checking out what's going on in Mike's world these days.As always thanks to Phil Lantz for making this thing sound as good as I hear it in my head.  It's been great to be able to have such a wonderful resource to make my pieces even better.   Thanks man.
